Retro Rewind (1983) – DynaTAC8000X Cell Phone

dynatac8000x This cell phone came out in 1983, weighed 2 pounds, and gave you just over 30 minutes of talk time for every charge.  The cost of this phone when it came out was $3,995.

The phone was developed by Motorola which was a process that took over 10 years.  In 1972 they were given just 6 weeks to come up with a working model of the phone.  The urgency was due to the FCC deciding on whether or not to allow AT&T to setup a network to provide wireless service in local markets.  AT&T was also working on a wireless phone so Motorola had to act fast if they wanted a piece of the market.

Eleven years and 100 million dollars later, the phone finally hit the public market.  The delay was due to having to build all of the towers and the infrastructure.

The picture to the left was taken in 1972 when the phone was first introduced, but it looked exactly the same when it was released to the public in 1983.

Cell phones sure have come a long way since then.
